Global Village - The 60s

October 4, 2003

During the 1960s Martians were green and Canada turned 100 years old. In the United States, the amazing era that saw Janice Joplin drive a psychedelic Porsche was also the scene the Civil Rights Movements and the John F. Kennedy murder. And while Yoko Ono was busy creating a Sky TV the USSR launched their Sputnik and ordered that a wall be erected in Berlin in order to prevent Eastern Block people from escaping to the West. There was a war in Vietnam, and China had a Little Red Book written and published by President Mao Tse Toung.

So how do you go about putting together an exhibition that reflects all that and more? The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has achieved this by collating the 1960s World Wide Waves under four main themes, i.e. Space, Media, Disorder and Change.

Janice Joplin's Porsche, Yoko Ono's Sky TV, Piero Manzoni's Base Holding Up the World, Donovan's painted guitar, 84 record album covers, posters, photos, TV show extracts, art and fashion objects from around the world are all part of this 250-work user-friendly exhibition.

Available for rent are audioguides that leave to each visitor the choice of listening to either great 60s music or informative comments... or both. Enquire for Museum volunteers' guided tours of this and permanent Museum collections. And to make sure this incredible decade never gets forgotten, a lavishly illustrated catalog and fun souvenirs can be purchased at the exhibition boutique.

Global Village - The 60s will be on display at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from October 2, 2003 to March 7, 2004.
